Adventure Time Season Finale Features Highly Anticipated Same-Sex Kiss

Princess Bubblegum

Spoilers ahead!

Last night, during the season finale of Cartoon Network's Adventure Time, fans got exactly what they had been hoping for: confirmation that Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen are an official romantic couple.

The series creators had been hinting at their romantic relationship for years, however, last night was the first time we saw the two kiss on screen.

While fighting against GOLB's minions, Marceline thought Bubblegum had perished. In a fit of rage, Marceline unleashed her wrath on the monster only to discover Bubblegum was okay. After the attack, the two embraced and gave each other a big ol' smooch on the lips.

Regarding the long-awaiting kiss, executive producer Adam Muto told TVLine, "There was some conversation about [logistics], but it was really up to [Hanna K. Nystromthe], the storyboard artist who got that scene, to decide what her take on it was going to be."

He continued, "It actually wasn't in the outline when it was submitted. It didn't say that they kiss. It just said they 'have a moment.' When Hanna boarded that, there was a little note in the margin that said 'Come on!' with a big exclamation point. That was the only note. I can't argue with that."

Following the kiss, there were a few shots of the couple -- who fans have dubbed "Bubbline" -- cozying on up to each other in the final montage, suggesting that the pair has decided to make their relationship official.

"There's enough to draw a conclusion," Muto said. "I don't want to lay out their entire future -- what their relationship will be like after this, and all that -- but there are enough pieces there that you can kind of construct what their life will be like going forward. We knew that if we put this in, it would get some attention. But would it be too much attention? ... Or would we be downplaying it too much? We knew we wanted to incorporate it, and in the end, you just have no control over how people will remember things."

Needless to say, fans were absolutely elated!
