Sister Act 2 holds a special place in the hearts of most millennials. For many of us, it was our first introduction to one Ms. Lauryn Hill, or Jennifer Love Hewitt, or that guy from City High. Even if you don't know or like gospel music, you know and love the L-Boogie/Tanya Blount version of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." You also know that if you want to be somebody. If you want to go somewhere. You better wake up and paaaaaaaaaay attention.
Broad City is a near-perfect encapsulation of our silly generation—capturing our fluid relation with our sexuality and identity, our obsession with and encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture, and the intensely close relationships we have with our friends.
So it was no surprise when—FOR NO REASON, mind you—a thoroughly '90s and thoroughly hilarious tribute to Sister Act 2 snuck its way into last night's episode. It was no surprise, but god damn, was it amazing. And Whoopi Goldberg got back in the habit!
After Ilana finally gets fired from Deals Deals Deals, her put-upon co-workers rejoice in the only way logical: a rousing rendition of "Joyful, Joyful."
With Whoopi, naked dudes and Vanessa Williams singing about shitting (beautifully, might I add), this ranks as one of the best episodes of Broad City, or anything, ever.
I'm just going to assume that Ms. Hill 's cameo was never confirmed.
