#TBT: BET's Black Girls Rock! Catches Disco Fever

disco divas

Disco divas of yestergay join in for a throwback medley of 'Got to Be Real,' 'I Want to Thank You' and 'We Are Family.'

BET's annual celebration of sisters doing it for themselves and each other, Black Girls Rock!, brought together First Lady Michelle Obama, soul siren Erykah Badu, Selma director Ava Duvernay, flawless human being Ciara and a number of activists and community organizers who inspire and empower women of color.

Closing out this year's show were three disco divas boogie-oogie-oogying back into the spotlight for a throwback medley of their dance classics.

Cheryl Lynn soo-hoo'd through with "Got to Be Real," followed by Alicia Meyers' disco-gospel (disgospel, if you will) ode to a higher power -- "I Want to Thank You" -- before they joined Kathy Sledge (sans her Sisters) for "We Are Family."

The disco ball-toting backup dancers were a little much, but disco was never about subtelty. Strap on those platforms and check out the performance below:

And if you need to further get your life, check out some of highlights from this year's Back Girls Rock!, including speeches from Mrs. Obama, Cicely Tyson, and Jada Pinkett-Smith.
