In the 1990s, Andrea Sperling helped launch the New Queer Cinema movement with films like the indie cult gem Totally Fucked Up, and produced the acclaimed lesbian satire But I’m a Cheerleader. She has since turned her keen eye toward up-and-coming filmmakers like Drake Doremus, with whom she collaborated on the Sundance hit Like Crazy. Though she’s been in the business for more than 20 years, Sperling made her first foray into television in 2014 with Amazon’s Transparent. The series, which swept every major awards ceremony this year, ignited in Sperling a new passion for trans representation on screen. “It feels great to produce a show that’s on the brink of this civil rights movement,” she says. “I am grateful to have had the chance to be a part of it.”
