In today's least surprising but very upsetting news, 94% of women in Hollywood claim to have faces sexual harassment and misconduct. That disturbing number is the result of a new poll conducted by USA Today in partnership with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, which surveyed 843 members of the Creative Coalition and Women in Film and Television.
In the wake of #MeToo and the Harvey Weinstein scandal, we're learning more every day about how sexism and sexual misconduct permeate every facet of the entertainment industry. According to the survey, 94% of women in Hollywood have experienced some kind of sexual misconduct at the hands of a superior, whether it's assault of harassment. 21% of those women were assaulted, and only on in four of them reported the misconduct. Of those women who reported, only 28% said their workplaces had made steps to change the toxic environments following the incidents.
Numbers don't lie, and the further we get from Harvey Weinstein the more concrete our understanding of just how much sexual misconduct permeates the industry becomes. While it comes as no surprise to any woman just how staggering these numbers our, hard facts are vital for the fight to dismantle sexism and toxically sexualized workplaces.
