Ivan Fahy, a LGBT activist and the first Irish male bridal model, recently gave a TEDxGalway Talk about the gender norms that permeate society and how he has redefined what it means to be a man--high heels and all.
During the talk, Fahy spoke about feeling different, a sentiment most LGBT can relate to. For many, childhood and adolescence were filled with gendered activities and confusing societal norms. Fahy encourages us to be more expressive and open. "Expression is healthy," he says, "and it is what makes us human."
After discussing his liberation from societal constraints, Fahy dissected the exact nature of these traditions:
"Traditions are engrained in society and go unquestioned. Homophobia, sexism, racism, etc. are all technically traditional. Traditions and norms are two evil best friends. Together they opress. They exclude rather than include."
