"Are you often dreaming of somebody?" questions Junglepussy--real name Shayna McHayle--on her woozy Pregnant With Success single, "Somebody." Though the album was first released in 2015, following her breakout Satisfaction Guaranteed mixtape in 2014, the New York rapper shared today a long overdue music video for the Erykah Badu-imbued song. "I wish upon a star for an afternoon with you," she says pointedly in the woodsy Erin Grant-directed visual.
"The last song I wrote for Pregnant with Success was 'Somebody,'" Junglepussy told Teen Vogue. "By the end of that project I was so happy with the direction I was headed in, I knew I was finally about to share my favorite parts of myself. Letting go of the self-imposed urgency I placed on the process of making new music allowed me to take time with myself. I needed to be patient with my feelings and just let them be. In doing so, I learned so much more about myself."
The music video sees Junglepussy performing alone in a cabin, as she plays chess in front of a fireplace, wriths around a sunny, windowed porch and paints inside a gazebo. Grant's treatment is an incredible display of nuance, bringing together this familiar, mundane environment with a campy '70s attitude and slick, stylized editing evocative of TLC's "No Scrubs." Though Junglepussy has taken an unforgivable break from releasing anything new, this was well-worth the wait and arguably the best video of 2017 thus far.
