Monique’s Slap-Happy Return

RLJ Entertainment

Never one to play by Hollywood’s rules, the Oscar winner is back with Bessie and Blackbird, in which she plays the mom of a gay teen (Julian Walker). She sounds off.

On Gay Sex
"A lady asked me about Blackbird's 'graphic scenes.' And I was like, 'Are you referring to when the two boys are making love? Would it be graphic if it were a man and a woman?' When you see these two men together, you should see the beauty in it."

On Why She's Unfazed by Her Supposed Hollywood "Blackballing"

"Never waver from what you know to be right. The moment you start doing that, you put your integrity on the line. I would never want anyone to get to the end of their journey and have regrets about their choices. You may have the applause of the people, but those people don't know you."

On Method Acting

"There's a scene where I have to slap Julian, and I slapped him about 17 times. For real. I slapped the sugar-honey-iced-tea out of that baby! When we finished, his face was so red, and I felt so bad! But he was a super trouper.

Blackbird is in select theaters April 24. Bessie premieres May 16 on HBO.
