Thoughts From Emily: a Video Letter to Rick Santorum and Kirk Cameron

Featuring a purple puppet speaking a letter by 8-year-old Emily about love and family

This cute, homemade video purports to be that of an 8-year-old girl named Emily and is told with a purple sock puppet (which makes us love it already). But it's also a video "letter" to Rick Santorum and Kirk Cameron for their recent homophobic, anti-family slogans. The video's message is simple and pretty straightforward: "If God creates love, and love creates homes, then why do you say my home is so bad when my family loves each other very much?"

We asked Mark Turner, the creator of the Emily character, to explain. As he told us:

"Emily is a character that is based off of mine and my boyfriend's nieces and nephews who have been raised with an open-minded Christian upbringing. (We don't have kids--yet). Emily was created to show the world that there are a multitude of religious sections, of all types, including Christian churches (6,860 churches in fact.), that welcome, accept, and love the LGBT community. She also represents the daughter that me and my boyfriend hope to have. We wanted to make the point."
As Turner says, "We wanted to make the point that God is love, love is home, and homes make a family. Gay marriage cannot be a religious point of contention when the church itself is divided into those who accept and those who don't."
