John Oliver Talks Mike Pence, Writes Competing Children’s Book About His Rabbit

John Oliver, Mike Pence, Last Week Tonight, Marlon Bundo

A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo.

It was all about Vice President Mike Pence on John Oliver's latest episode of Last Week Tonight. Arguably the most dangerous for LGBTQ people policy-wise in the current administration, Pence is also the one person Donald Trump can't fire.

Oliver, with some help from Omarosa in the Celebrity Big Brother house, highlights Pence's frighteningly far right evangelical views on abortion and conversion therapy, along with divisive views from his past about women in the military, and his ability to dodge a question.

The most interesting thing to come out of the segment is learning that Pence has a pet rabbit named Marlon Bundo. Yes, homophobic Mike Pence named his pet rabbit after a notoriously queer Hollywood actor. Not only does Marlon Bundo have his own Instagram, he also has his own children's book out this week. That didn't sit too well with Oliver so, as he does, he published his own competing children's book about the "BOTUS" (yes, that's bunny of the United States).

Whereas Pence's book will be taken on a small tour including a notable stop with the anti-gay organization Focus on the Family, Oliver's will have its sales directly benefit the Trevor Project and AIDS United. The audio version of Oliver's A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo will feature the voices of Jim Parsons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, RuPaul and more. "You'd be doing a nice thing in a really dickish way," Oliver said about buying his book and helping it outsell Pence's, "and isn't that the dream at the end of the day?"
