You know you're getting an unusual theatrical experience as soon as you arrive. The Cavern Club Theater is located in the basement of a kitschy Mexican restaurant called Casita del Campo in Silver Lake, the cool enclave of Los Angeles. Dane Whitlock has crafted other parody shows before, but if you're of the right generation (like I am) that gorged on repeat episodes of Little House on the Prairie, then it's easy to understand why sitting in the cramped basement to see a bunch of grownups spoofing the TV version of Laura Ingalls Wilder's autobiographical pioneer story is so howlingly funny. The show had a sold-out run in April and now is back for a command performance August 16-25.
Comedian Drew Droege nearly steals the show as a version of rich brat Nellie Oleson, who was played by Allison Arngrim and has given her blessing, saying it was "Pants wettingly funny" (almost true!).
The rest of the stellar actors include Libby Baker, Tom Lowe, Joe Donohoe, Amy Procacci, Brad Griffith, Mark Rowe, Jennifer Blake, Sydney Blair, Matthew Herrmann, Rae Dawn Hadinger, and Frances Chewning. And Melissa Gilbert, who starred in the original television show, has also visited, saying. "The best ab workout I've ever had. I haven't laughed that hard for that long in years. Run, don't walk! You will not be disappointed!" We agree. Check it out next month.
