WooHoo! New Sims 4 Update Deletes Gender Binary

Go ahead. Make your Sim-ified Prince.

Thanks to a year of consulting with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and longtime requests of players, a new update for The Sims 4, available Thursday, will remove gender restrictions from character customization.

In other words: Sim Ellen and Sim Prince are on the way.

Electronic Arts said in a statement that it wanted to "make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims' gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more."

Players will have the ability to put any clothes, hairstyles, or accessories on their Sim--that means female-bodied Sims can wear suits and short hair, and male-bodied Sims can put on jewelry or high heels. And they can be as fluid as the player wants, too--the gender can be changed at any point in the game.

"Our players are constantly engaged in a conversation with us about The Sims, and they're always requesting more of everything," lead producer Lyndsay Pearson said. "In this case, players have been asking why certain hairstyles, clothing, and other options were limited to one gender or the other."

Since the game premiered in 2000, players have been able to kiss and "WooHoo" with Sims of the same gender, and as of 2009, marry them as well.
