The indie film about pioneer trans activist Marsha P. Johnson may be the Stonewall film we've been waiting for.

No T, no shade, but Roland Emmerich's Stonewall was a hot mess.

Aside from the slipshod quality of the film itself, Emmerich garnered a fair share of criticism for seeminlgy whitewashing the history of the Stonewall Riots.

While Emmerich's Stonewall was gearing up to underwhelm audiences over the summer, Reina Gossett and Sasha Wortzel were filming their own tale around that watershed night. Happy Birthday, Marsha! focuses on Stonewall vet and pioneering trans activist Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson, played by Tangerine's Mya Taylor in the hours leading up to the Riots.

Eve Lindley portrays fellow legendary activist Sylvia Rivera and Grace Dunham (Lena's sis) makes an appearance as a stone butch named Junior. Zackary Drucker, a trans performance atist and an associate producer on Transparent, serves as the film's consulting producer.

Happy Birthday, Marsha! is especially unique in that it is co-written, co-directed and co-produced by a trans woman of color. However, the film is still only in post-production and Gossett and Wortzel have launched an Indiegogo campaign to help finish it.
