In director Steve McQueen's Shame, actor Michael Fassbender plays an often-naked businessman type who is unable to connect to other people, including his own sister played memorably by Carey Mulligan. One way he gets around this? Lots and lots of anonymous sex.
Out.com sat down with Fassbender, who discussed his character and why there might be more to him than meets the eye.
"For me, the script when I first read it, I was like, this is a really beautiful story," he said. "It’s about people trying to connect, trying to navigate through life."
And does that include the scene where Brandon, Fassbender's character, ducks into a gay bar to find release?
"People read into all of these things, thinking that must be the lowest anybody can do," he said, addressing the idea that the film portrays Brandon's man-on-man action as him hitting rock bottom. "Essentially it’s like, where do you get your fix?
"Talking to people who suffer from the condition, it’s like wherever you can get your rocks off."
