On their website, the Roundabout Theatre Company bills the play as a "gripping story about family, success and what we're willing to sacrifice for both." In reality, though, the play was about daddy issues, secretly gay rich guys, and what to do when your loud, brash, ruby-wearing "wife" won't sit next to you while you contemplate suicide. Issues we can all obviously relate to. Sort of.
It's set at the height of the Great Depression, in a basement apartment in Greenwich Village. A young, snow-white Virginia Kull is playing a bored actress post coitus, talking to her really handsome and brooding husband (played here by Adam Driver) while he gets dressed in the bathroom. The events that follow are simple enough: she finds out that her handsome and brooding boyfriend's dad is the same ruthless financier that's been all over the news, the ruthless financier shows up at the apartment to hide out, he makes his son pose as his gay lover to persuade the president of American Electric (also a secret "fairy," as they say in the play) to cut him some slack, and then the shit hits the fan.
Surprisingly, the play was written in 1963, but it comes off as if it was written yesterday. And if the above recounting of events isn't enough to interest you, Adam Driver is shirtless a good few times.
