Monday, October 27: New Yorkers have an exclusive opportunity tonight to catch the Manhattan premiere of Bruce LaBruces Otto; or, Up With Dead People at the Museum of Modern Art. The latest from punk homocore director LaBruce follows the oddly attractive zombie (is that so wrong?) Otto, who is suddenly back from the dead, discovered by an independent filmmaker, and thrust into the lead role of her political-porno-zombie thriller. (If only all struggling actors caught such a break.)
Watch the trailer and head to the MoMa website for more info before the film screens at 7:00 PM EST (tickets at the door only; $10, $6 for students). For more on LaBruce and Otto, pick up the November issue of Out, or read our story later this week on Out.com.
Tuesday, October 28: Your musical mission for this Tuesday is to pick up at least two of the three new queer albums dropping today -- or, hell, just grab them all. First, out singer and producer Richard Morel releases his new album, The Death of the Paper Boy, which the musician classifies as his own new genre, shoegazer disco. The mood is mellow and melancholy, but melodic, and you can preview it directly from the artists site. Meanwhile, visionary art-disco icon Arthur Russells Love is Overtaking Me features more than 20 previously unreleased demos and home recordings from the late songwriter, composer, and producer, who died from AIDS-related complications in 1992.
Finally, get your hands on Microcastle by Deerhunter. The Atlanta-based quintet led by self-described asexual front man Bradford Cox describe their sound as ambient punk. For a sample, check out the video for Strange Lights off their last album, Cryptograms. On their latest work, they lay down fresh tracks like the blues-tinged Saved by Old Times," which features a vocal collage by the Black Lips Cole Alexander and Cox singing about being captured by Victorian vampires. These boys wear dark and decedent so well.
Wednesday, October 29: If you caught the season premiere of the CWs Stylista last week we know you breathed a loud sigh of relief when you realized youve got a stop-gap until the next installment of Project Runway. The new reality series takes place at the intersection of PR and The Devil Wears Prada, following 11 young, eager aspiring junior editors trying to snag a coveted position with Elle's fashion news director -- and fashion icon -- Anne Slowey. These guys and gals will do whatever it takes to win the prize, which also includes a year-long clothing allowance with H&M and paid-for Manhattan housing.
Catch up on the shows website, then tune in tonight and every Wednesday at 8:00 PM EST. Meanwhile, New York art aficionados should DVR Stylista so they can attend a book signing with Danielle Levitt, the renowned photographer who is publishing her first monograph, We Are Experienced, which documents American youth culture over the course of four years. The event takes place tonight from 7:00 to 9:00 PM EST at Deitch Projects.
Thursday, October 30: Well have red-hot action tonight from two red-state divas. Catch Grammy Award winner (and country music sensation) Crystal Gayle (Dont It Make My Brown Eyes Blue and Tony Award nominee Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde the Musical) as they appear together for the first time in Kentucky Girlfriends, in which the duo pays tribute to their Kentucky roots with songs ranging from Blue Moon of Kentucky to That's What I Love about the South. The show runs Tuesday through Thursday at 8:30 PM EST, with two shows on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM, playing at Feinsteins at Loews Regency in New York City. Get details on tickets here.
Friday, October 31: Theres nothing scarier than a city full of Sarah Palins and John McCains. You may want to just avoid Halloween altogether and beeline it to the nearest theater to catch Angelina Jolies latest flick, The Changeling. A period thriller set in the 1920s and inspired by a true story, it tells the tale of a desperate mother whose son -- after missing for five months -- is returned by the authorities... or is he? If thats not unsettling enough, go ahead and hit the streets in full-on drag. If you live in San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York City, link up to the 411 on your local Halloween parade.
Saturday, November 1: Almost any excuse to go to Hammerstein Ballroom is a good one, but this one is really good: You can see the B-52s in a special concert as they live it up on the Day of the Dead (or el Da de Los Muertos, como decimos en Mxico) with guests Special Disco Version (featuring James Murphy and Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem) and Hercules & Love Affair. The band will be playing tracks off their new album, Funplex, as well as a host of old party favorites (Love Shack baby? Yes, please.)
Get your tickets here for the show, which starts at 7:00 PM EST.
Sunday, November 2: If the thought of waiting until January for the next season of The L Word gets your lesbian knickers in a twist, pick up The L Word: The Complete Fifth Season, out now on DVD. If youre not already a fan of the groundbreaking series, catch up on iTunes immediately.
