Out100: James Brewster & Bob Satawake

Ambassador to the Dominican Republic / Philanthropist

Photography by Ryan Pfluger in Central Park, New york, on September 19, 2015.

Though the Caribbean isn't known for its positive treatment of the LGBT community, the tides are turning. As the first LGBT couple to represent the United States in the Western Hemisphere, Ambassador James "Wally" Brewster (right) and his husband, Bob Satawake, faced criticism from Catholic and evangelical leaders when Brewster's appointment was announced in 2013. But Brewster sees an upside. As he explains: "Moving to a country that has not traditionally embraced LGBT culture -- and seeing how our public exposure to their society has created a conversation -- is something that we truly embrace as a blessing."
