Ava DuVernay, the Oscar-nominated director behind A Wrinkle in Time, Selma, and 13th, has posted about the historic directing hires made on the new Star Wars film.
Star Wars: Episode IX will see director J.J. Abrams returning to the franchise to continue the storylines he began in The Force Awakens, but will also see a woman of color, Victoria Mahoney, working as the Second Unit Director. She's worked as a director on several television shows and as a character actor in Legally Blonde.

The Second Unit is responsible for supplementary footage: establishing shots, stunts, inserts, cutaways, etc.
DuVernay announced the hire over Instagram, writing: "Happy to share this historic news. A black woman directing stories in a galaxy far, far away. First unit director J.J. Abrams. Second unit director Victoria Mahoney."
