The Moment: May 17, 2004: Marcia Kadish and Tanya McCloskey are married in America's first legal same-sex wedding.

"In 1996, I was in Hawaii doing the world's first-ever trial on gay people's freedom to marry -- which we won," says Evan Wolfson, founder and president of the national marriage equality campaign Freedom to Marry. "Congress was passing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act," he says, to block same-sex marriages that had not even happened. In 2013, the Supreme Court dismantled DOMA, and a string of anti-equality state constitutional amendments have likewise been struck down. "What we are doing is working," Wolfson says, "but we need to keep doing it, since winning is not won, and it's not a
done deal until it's done."
