David Bowie's Labyrinth to Get a Sequel

David Bowie

Directed by Uruguayan filmmaker Fede Alvarez.

Jim Henson's 1986 cult classic, Labyrinth, which starred David Bowie as a Goblin King, will get a sequel directed by Fede Alvarez. The Uruguayan filmmaker is best known for 2016's Don't Breathe and2013's Evil Dead, and has been recruited to direct the sequel and co-write the script with Jay Basu. Lisa Henson, daughter of Labyrinth's original director, will producer.

When Labyrinth first premiered in theaters, the movie was a box office flop, but eventually attracted a cult-like following years later (a Labyrinth-themed masquerade ball is held annually in Los Angeles). In the original, Jennifer Connelly plays Sarah, a young teen who wishes her brother away. She's given 13 hours by Jareth, played by Bowie, to complete a complicated labyrinth filled with bizarre puppet creatures in order to get him back.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the new production is arranged by Tri-Star and will not be a "remake" nor a "reboot," but a continuation of the original story set inside Henson's whimsical world. The Goblin King will not be represented in the sequel, likely as a result of criticism about profiting off Bowie's death when rumors swirled of a remake after he died.

Alvarez is currently working on The Girl in the Spider's Web, a sequel to psychological thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and will begin working on Labyrinth once The Girl in the Spider's Web is released in October next year.
