This year, essie has partnered with Jonathan Van Ness, Queer Eye star and grooming guru in a spectacular collaboration for Pride, marking the first time essie will collaborate with a non-female influencer. Van Ness worked with the essie team to showcase the ultimate pride season look through a pride-themed mani.
Jonathan Van Ness lives his life every second being the authentic and proud person that he is. essie global lead educator, Rita Remark, worked with Van Ness to create a mani design in which could embody these traits and truly reflects Van Ness's character.
Remark shares how she created the perfect Pride inspired mani for Van Ness by playing with different styles. "Some of my favorite nail designs happen when you mix two styles together. For example, this look features elements of an abstract painting and marble design."
Remark and Van Ness managed to showcase the perfect use of color and design elements to represent how they envision what a colorful pride looks like to them. "We wanted the colors of the rainbow, rather than be painted in a typical arc, to energetically splash across each nail for a playful, artistic result," recalled Remark. "Bold nail designs like this are ideal when polishing just three or four nails. On all ten nails it may seem overwhelming, but on just a few, it's the perfect balance."
As part of Pride celebration and support, essie has selected a number of their cult favorite shades to help anyone choose a stylish look this season. The brand will be sampling nail polish at many LGBTQ+ events throughout the US during month of June, showing attendees colorful ways to style nails. What's more? "They're also creating exclusive Pride nail art on @essie Instagram, where you can learn how to recreate my look and show your #essielove!" says a prideful Van Ness.
Below are tips from essie global lead educator and celebrity manicurist, Rita Remark on how to nail that beautiful pride-themed mani, like the one JVN wears.
Step-By-Step Breakdown:
1. To begin, after manicuring apply smooth-e base coat to prime each nail.
2. Express yourself - you can choose to manicure all nails - or as per Jonathan's signature manicure style, polish a few. For this look, Remark used essie shades butler please, in the cab-ana, come here!, chillato, play date, geranium, and tart deco to create abstract rainbow nail art.
3. To recreate, apply each shade one at a time, using the polish brush to blend, creating a marble effect as if all the colors are melting into one another. Repeat on desired number of nails.
4. Once the design is complete, top each nail with gel.setter top coat for a high-shine finish.
