"This has been one of the most insane years I could have ever expected," says singer-songwriter Jess Glynne, who in the span of just 18 months became only the second British female solo artist to score five number 1 singles in the U.K. (the other, Cheryl Cole, took five years). After winning a Grammy this past February for "Rather Be," her breakthrough collaboration with the electronic dance act Clean Bandit, Glynne released her debut solo record, I Cry When I Laugh, a collection of soaring disco-pop tracks, many inspired by a breakup with a girlfriend. The 26-year-old siren quickly proved that she could spin heartache into gold when the album also raced to the top of the U.K. charts. "My music is full of hope in the face of any kind of adversity," Glynne says, "and I will always encourage that."
