This New Capsule Collection Plays With Traditional Masculinity

Presenting during New York Men's Fashion Week, Patrick Church showcased a brilliant, whimsical capsule line. The inspiration behind the collection? "The inspiration behind the line was to take something that is typically considered 'masculine' like a wife beater and adjust it to be more flamboyant and playful," Church told us. "Adorning the pieces with my art and confessional text makes each piece unique and personal and tells a story."

He also mentioned that having a narrative is extremely important within his work. You can clearly see this in the collection. "As an artist, I want to redefine masculinity," he said. "Masculinity, personally to me is individual and on a spectrum. I like that we are creating a family and a safe space for people to be able to express themselves and feel empowered."

To engage viewers at his presentation, Church took the experience one step further with a live painting session. "It was important for me to do a painting performance because I feel like it's such an organic simple process in such a digital age," he said. The feeling people had there is ephemeral in a world where nothing disappears. The photographs may exist online but the feeling people had watching it is unique."
