These ain't your mother's cartoons, that's for sure!
Mexican artist Alex Ojeda is taking some of the most iconic characters from our favorite animated childhood shows and movies — like the Disney princes, the Scooby Doo gang, popular comic book characters like the X-Men, and more — and putting his own sexy, very gay spin on them! There are four themes that I have been passionate about since I was a child: Disney, cartoons from the '80s and '90s, superheroes, and Japanese anime. Making sensual fusions between these themes has always pleased me. Who hasn't imagined dressing up as a Sailor Scout? And what better way to see the leading men of Disney dressed in those suits but in a sensual way? I do, imagining the male version of Sailor Moon is a fantasy that I can capture in my drawings.
Since I was a child, when I saw a Disney movie or a classic cartoon with male characters, there was something in my imagination that saw them differently. I imagined sensual situations between those characters, in sensual costumes or even better, without any clothes! I imagined that when the princesses went to sleep, the princes got together to play with each other at private parties in a gay environment where they stopped being the good guys and became the naughty guys. Who wouldn't want to go play with them?
It's crazy to think about how all this started, and what the social media platforms like Instagram were, especially where I was able to share my love for drawing illustrations inspired by the LGBTQ + community and inspired by cartoon characters from my childhood and remake them.
I always thought that I couldn't be the only one with these kinds of fantasies. I really liked drawing all this for myself, until one day my partner encouraged me to open my social media accounts and share all the material that I had made. What was my surprise when I realized how many people liked my illustrations and followed me. This became a new job for me, since many people commissioned me to draw their own fantasies with the Disney princes, with some superheroes, or even seeing themselves transformed into princes or some heroine in male versions.
The reaction has been very positive. The comments and messages that my followers send me are from people who share their happiness with my art, even telling me that they had always imagined something like this but they didn’t think that they would be able to see it embodied in art one day. Since childhood, almost all of us fantasize about our favorite characters, and making these fantasies come true motivates me to continue creating new things for our community every day.
I always wanted to work on what I am most passionate about. Being an illustrator, today I can say that I am fulfilling that dream. I am from Mexico and seeing so much love from people from all over the world is very motivating for me. In January, a client of mine exhibited part of my work at the Museum of Sex in New York. If I could go back in time and someone told me that something like this would happen to me, I would not believe it! But today, more than ever, I can assure you that it’s never too late to fulfill your dreams and make them happen.
