The American Civil Liberties Union is committed to the defense of voting rights, racial justice, reproductive freedom, LGBT rights, women's rights -- and to keeping America "safe and free." At the end of 2014, just before the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture, Romero notably encouraged President Obama to pardon George W. Bush and other government officials involved in torture -- not to let anyone off the hook, but as a means of reiterating the criminal and un-American nature of such acts.
