Truman Says

As we mentioned last week, pictures of actress Helena Bonham Carter photographed by Juergen Teller and wearing a dress from Marc Jacobs' fall 2011 collection hit the internet, sparking rumors that the actress would be the latest in a long line of celebrities to star in his ad campaigns.

Like it or not, swimwear season is upon us. For those of you who slaved away at the gym all winter long, you can finally show off the rewards of your hard work. The last thing you'd want to do beach-side, though, is make a fashion faux pas. When you're wearing minimal amounts of clothing, everything matters. As you're probably aware, we're oh-so-over the saggy, baggy board short, and instead are favoring trim, tailored trunks for indulging in some fun in the sun.

Brooklyn Workshop, home to the inventors of the curious Skatecycle -- which is a strange contraption that is essentially self-propelled, hubless skateboard -- will be enlisting the help of 13 artists to create custom Skatecycles for sale, from which all proceeds will go to Global Giving in support of the Japanese earthquake relief effort. The one-of-a-kind Skatecycles will be sold exclusively on Gilt Groupe's Gilt MAN on Thursday, June 23, 2011.

Well color us surprised -- Miuccia Prada has picked Tobey Maguire to star as the face of the label's fall ad campaign, shot by David Sims. Maguire strikes us as a bit of an odd choice, and certainly isn't the most fashion-y of Hollywood names. Plus, the label rarely uses celebrities over models, but if Miuccia wants it, she must have her reasons, and we trust them. Here are two pictures -- very moody, no?

True story: This past weekend while trolling around the ritzy TriBeCa neighborhood in New York we ducked into Thom Browne's clinically austere store to avoid some weekend rain. To kill some time we tried on a few suits and had the Browne clones dress us up in his latest exaggerated suiting. The result was actually marvelous -- together, the high-waisted dark gray slacks that cut off two inches before the floor, a crisp white dress shirt and a cropped blazer, all crafted in mohair, made us feel dapper beyond belief.

One of the most interesting contradictions of the fashion industry is the conundrum of models. For a business that is so notoriously liberal and obsessed with new, never-before-seen concepts the standards of beauty have been unwaveringly limited. Unless used for a specific effect, female models tend to be thin and white. But there has been a recent micro-trend arising from within the industry that has piqued our interest: androgynous and transgenered models.
