The Color Purple | Official Trailer

The first trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of The Color Purple musical is here!

The first trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of The Color Purple musical is here, marking American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino's major motion picture debut.

The Color Purple follows the lives and struggles of Black women living in the South in the early 1900s. The story follows Celie, a Black woman who is abused by her father and husband.

The musical was based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker of the same name, which was adapted into a movie in 1985. The reboot has been described by Warner Brothers as a “bold new take on the beloved classic," and is an adaptation of the 2007 Broadway musical.

The Broadway musical’s hit song “I’m Here” plays in the background of the trailer, showcasing other cast members such as Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R, Colman Domingo, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Corey Hawkins, and Danielle Brooks.

Brooks is reprising her Tony-nominated role of Sofia, who she portrayed in the 2015 Broadway reboot of the show alongside Cynthia Erivo and Jennifer Hudson. Barrino is also reprising her starring role of Celie, who she portrayed in the original Broadway run.

Oprah Winfrey starred in the 1985 Steven Spielberg-directed movie as Sofia, for which she was nominated for an Oscar. Winfrey and Speilberg are both producers on the 2023 movie.

Winfrey shared an early preview of the musical movie to audiences in April at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, telling them that the original film “was the biggest and most important thing that happened to me,” adding that it still holds “great personal meaning.”

At a virtual event launching the trailer, Winfrey stated: “As long there is a need for self-discovery, self-empowerment, as long as there is a need for victory in someone’s life, as long as there is a need for people to know what it feels like to be loved up and to be made full and hold to somebody else’s love, there will be a need for The Color Purple.”

The Color Purple premieres in theaters on Christmas Day.
