This summer, Out enters its 30th year with over 300 printed issues. Here, we revisit and re-create 10 covers — celebrating them for what they were while reimagining them for newer audiences.
Lea DeLaria has never been afraid of grabbing the mic — and the spotlight. She was the first out gay comedian to do so on American late-night television, in 1993 with an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show. And she’s been going ever since. Our March 1998 cover celebrated her as “Hollywood’s Latest Lesbian Love Interest.”
At the time, she was headed to Broadway with the musical On the Town and was just back from making two films. But, in this re-creation, it’s “Lesbian Jesus” Hayley Kiyoko grabbing the world’s attention.
Similarly unabashed about her sexuality, in a moment when sapphics are leading culture more than ever, she is one of the internet’s most beloved stars. Since the release of her hit "Girls Like Girls" in 2015 (which was also her coming out of sorts,) the multihyphenate has made it to be in the drivers seat of her career, famously directing her videos. That control has allowed the pop star to create projects that have made space for an incredibly devoted (and increasingly growing) set of fans who look to her, often to put words to their feelings. It's as a result of that work that, in 2019 she was given the Youth Innovator Award from the Trevor Project for her “commitment to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning young people.”
Over the span of her career, the singer has worked with bold faced names like Taylor Swift, Kehlani, and more. In November she teamed up with FLETCHER to release "Cherry," which we dubbed the sapphic banger of the year. And with her sophomore album, Panorama, out in July, a now-public relationship status, and a tour kicking off in August, it looks like everything is turning up Hayley.
