Late last year, Johnston sat in front of a camera, looked it directly in the eye, and said, "The longer I played sport and the more I hid from who I was, the more difficult it became to tell teammates and tell people around me the truth about myself... I'm a writer, art director, filmmaker, and a hockey goalkeeper, and I'm also a gay man." Poignant and honest, the Australian field hockey goalie created one of the most complex, truthful assessments of homophobia in sports and the potential to overcome it.
