Pita Taufatofua was one of the most talked about people at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio whose name you probably didn’t know. After entering the stadium during the opening ceremony shirtless, oiled up, and waving Tonga’s flag, Taufatofua became an internet sensation and one of the non-competitive highlights of the Games.
During this year’s opening ceremony for the Pyeongchang Winter Games, to the delight of many, the glistening Tongan was chosen to carry the flag of his country again. After losing early on in Rio, where Taufatofua was competing in Tae Kwan Do, the athlete decided to try his hand at a sport he’d never tried before in an attempt to qualify for this year’s Games. Now, he’s officially competing in cross country skiing on the Olympic stage. Hopefully his team’s uniform is a bit warmer than his Opening Ceremony look. See some of the internet’s reactions to Taufatofua’s return, below.
