'Out,' 'Schitt's Creek,' Dolly Parton Win at GLAAD Media Awards

Dan Levy, Raquel Willis, Dolly Parton

Our 'Trans Obituaries Project' conceptualized and created by our former executive editor Raquel Willis won Outstanding Magazine Article.

Out and The Advocate were winners when the 2019 GLAAD Media Award were announced earlier this evening. Former Out executive editor Raquel Willis won in the category of Outstanding Magazine Article for 'The Trans Obituaries Project.' The project appeared as a part of our 2019 Out100 and was a three-part package that not only honored the Black trans women we lost, but marked out a path forward. The Advocate won in the category of Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage.

The awards were announced during a virtual ceremony that streamed live on the group's Facebook and YouTube. For those who missed it, the event can be seen again Monday, August 3, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time on Logo TV.

In other awards, Pose won for Outstanding Drama Series while Schitt's Creek won for Outstanding Comedy Series. The film Booksmart won for Outstanding Film - Wide Release, and Transparent: Musicale Finale was selected as the Outstanding TV Movie. Lil Nas X was recognized as the Outstanding Music Artist.

The ceremonies were hosted by comedians Fortune Feimster and Gina Yashere, and featured special performances from Chloe x Halle, Shea Diamond, and Ben Platt.

The original in-person ceremony, split between fundraisers in New York and Los Angeles, was canceled earlier this year due to the health crisis; Taylor Swift and Janet Mock had been the buzzed-about planned celebrity honorees.

The virtual awards event included appearances by a slew of celebs like Kandi Burruss, Cara Delevingne, Beanie Feldstein, Jennifer Garner, Theo Germaine, Dan Levy, Demi Lovato, Rachel Maddow, Lil Nas X, Ryan O'Connell, Dolly Parton, Angelica Ross, Lilly Singh, Darryl Stephens, Charli XCX, Raquel Willis and many more.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis noted the importance of recognizing LGBTQ+ contributions during this period of increased rhetoric and divisiveness.

"During this era of political and cultural division, LGBTQ images in media are crucial in accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ community and countering the dangerous rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric," Ellis said in a statement. "This year's award recipients, including Pose and Schitt's Creek, continue to bring necessary mainstream visibility to diverse voices within the LGBTQ community, ultimately raising the bar for LGBTQ inclusion and representation in media."
