Watch the Erotic Trailer for 'Benedetta,' New Film About Lesbian Nuns

lesbian nuns in 'Benedetta'

The Paul Verhoeven project is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this summer.

Holy lesbian nuns, this is a wild ride.

The first trailer for Paul Verhoeven's newest film has dropped and it has everything: stigmata, Charlotte Rampling, self flagellation, accidental breast touching, and most of all, lesbian nuns.

Benedetta, Verhoeven's first film in five years, features all the eroticism we're used to from a Verhoeven film, but transfers it to a fifteenth century Italian convent.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the film follows Benadetta Carlinini, who joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany, "as a novice nun with a huge secret: At an early age, she developed the ability to perform miracles, though her impact on her new religious family takes a sexually charged turn after she's plagued by erotic visions that soon lead to a romantic entanglement with a fellow sister."

The trailer is filled with beautiful shots of the beautiful, but overbearing Italian convent. As Sister Benedetta shows up there, she immediately draws the attention of locals, higher-ups in the church, and her fellow nuns. Not all of the attention is good though.

An older nun played by Academy Award-nominee Charlotte Rampling, and a male church official seem to be digging in deeper to find out if the miracles Benadetta performs are real or not. The miracles seem to also ramp up the local community, who are seen going up to her and kneeling in one scene, and marching with torches towards a life-size crucifix in another.

There's also lots and lots of lesbian nun sex.

Benadetta will be played by Virginie Efira, a Belgian actress who also appeared in Verhoeven's film Elle. She has also starred in films like It Boy, Sibyl, An Impossible Love, and In Bed with Victoria, for which she received a Magritte Award for Best Actress and a Cesar nomination for Best Actress.

Verhoeven is known for taking big risks, even if they don't always work. Movies like Basic Instinct, Showgirls, and Starship Troopers weren't always embraced when they were released, but have steadily built legions of loyal fans in the years since. His last film was 2016's Elle, which earned an Oscar nomination for Isabelle Huppert.

The film is set to debut at this year's Cannes Film Festival, which will take place in July. Could it be this year's big lesbian awards-bait movie? Verhoeven is obviously not a lesbian, and neither are the stars, but this is exactly the kind of lesbian film that critics love, down to having one blonde and one brunette. It's even based on a true story, adapting the non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy by historian Judith C. Brown. Hopefully no lesbians die in this one.
