Truman Says

Ever since the John Galliano mêlée earlier this year, which got him booted from the house of Dior, the fashion world has been waiting with baited breath to hear who would step in to replace him. The storied house has taken its time to announce a successor, which has caused a major game of speculation to take place (names like Givenchy's Ricard Tisci and Lanvin's Albert Elbaz have all been rumored to be the heir apparent).

Should, by some miracle of God's doing, Coco Chanel lived to see today, she would have been 128 years young. Sadly, we lost the little spitfire back in 1971 when she was only 87 years of age. Nonetheless, the house of Chanel has hired the forever young Karl Lagerfeld to take her place, and he's made the luxury house a consistently powerful name in fashion, with no signs of slowing. Madame Chanel would be proud, we think.

What we love most about The New York Times is that they aren't afraid to tackle high-brow and low, especially since they unleashed their usual columnists to a bunch of meta-blogs. The perfect example is the way celebrated critic Cathy Horyn hits the ground running on her On The Runway blog. During Fashion Week, she uses it to share cute Tweets, quick thoughts, random moments and the like before her fuller, and more thoughtful proper reviews that run in the actual paper (as well as online).

While Carine Roitfeld's departure from her position as EIC of Vogue Paris sent tongues a wagging less than a year ago, girlfriend has been busier, and more visible than ever. Her latest endeavor was to style in Barneys' fall campaign, and she enlisted the help of her family and friends, and even stepped in front of the lens herself (above, in Rick Owens -- werq).

Billed as a tally of two cities, Paris Vs. New York the romantic City of Lights versus the aggressive Big Apple, there are numerous ways to wax rhapsodic on the many different ways that the two cities can be compared. One seminal way, of course, has to do with the women who dictate taste and fashion. For gay Paris, its the frizzy, flaming-haired designer Sonia Rykiel versus the tightly-bobbed, stiff-upper-lipped Wintour (little need be sad regarding who we favor).
