If anyone needs a vacation, it's Florence Welch. The esoteric lead singer of Florence + The Machine is nothing short of a red-haired Wonderwoman, having stayed on and off the touring circuit since 2007. Now, with her latest tour coming to a close, Florence plans on taking a well-deserved year of R&R--and writing a musical in the meantime.
You read that right: Florence is taking her grand style (and, no doubt, that harp) from music video to musical theater. "It would be amazing to get into the West End," she said in an interview with the London Evening Standard. "That's obviously the dream goal." Longtime friend and costume designer Sophie Hart-Walsh will collaborate on the project, and the two will lean on their friendship for a jolt of inspiration--exactly what the British sensation is looking for.
They might not have to look far. Florence isn't exactly minimalist in her approach. Her songs ring out like orchestral anthems, and her performance style gives a graceful touch to the usual pop scene fanfare. With a musical cooking in the back of her mind, her theatricality is only going to get bigger and brighter--like in "Spectrum," released this spring. There's no denying it: This woman has Broadway written all over her.
