Las Vegas is set to kick off the state's first Trans Pride Week today and it will take place through Sunday.
Organized by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada (The Center), Gender Justice Nevada, GetEQUAL Nevada, Northwest Community Church, and Mary Magdalene Friends UCC, the five-day event will feature activities designed to bring awareness and pride to the local trans community.
"Trans Pride Week is incredibly important because the transgender community has historically been excluded from broader pride celebrations and continues to be underrepresented in pride organizations and at parades and festivals, including here in Southern Nevada," Mel Goodwin, The Center's program director, said. "Las Vegas Trans Pride Week has been organized for and by the transgender community with support from some wonderful allies."
The inaugural celebration kicks off with a Trans Pride March Wednesday, Nov. 20, stepping off from the Center at 7 p.m. and wrapping up at City Hall. Thursday's events include an installation at the Center in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance as well as a community conversation called TransGiving. On Sunday, Nov. 24, closing events include a worship service at 2 p.m. at the Center, followed by an evening of celebration and a Trans Pride Week Mixer at Club Metro, with an $8 beer bust and $10 liquor bust.
