OUT in Montreal: Rena’s Perfect Day

Unforgettable food, a sublime spa treatment, and some of the best street art—what more could a city offer?

Last week, the OUT staff undertook its annual group trip to gather content for the Travel Issue (coming to a newsstand near you in November!) We had an epic long weekend in Montreal (check out #OutinMontreal on Instagram!) and now, sadly, we're back at our desks. But, every day for the rest of the week we're going to share some of our favorite experiences from our foray up north.

Today, OUT's Senior Design Editor, Rena Ohashi (@missohashi) offers up her version of a perfect day in Montreal:

1. Crew Cafe

If you want to start your day in a beautiful space with a good coffee and food this is your place--it's one of the most impressive coffee spots I've ever seen. I couldn't stop staring at the incredibly high art deco ceiling and cathedral style windows. The space that used to be the old Royal Bank of Canada, and it was repurposed as a cafe and co-working space very recently.

2. Old Montreal

Stroll around cobblestone streets filled with artisans' boutiques, art galleries, terraces, and cafes. Don't miss the gothic revival architecture of Notre-Dame Basilica.

3. Bota Bota

An amazing place to refresh your mind, and rest your body and soul, Bota Bota is Montreal's best spa. And I'm a big fan of Spa in general--this one is quite chic, too. I really enjoyed the stunning view of the Old Port from outdoor spas, and the water circuit was truly relaxing and calming experience--it brought me to a Zen state of mind!

4. Saint-Laurent Boulevard / Mural Festival

It was inspiring to see some large-scale graffiti as I walked around in Saint-Laurent Boulevard. The street is also filled with vintage shops, cool boutique stores, cafes, restaurants, and art galleries. Don't miss the Mural festival which will be held on June 9-19.

5. Agrikol

A restaurant created by the band members of Arcade Fire, Agrikol's food and drinks are pure Haitian deliciousness. Eclectic and dreamy decor, and great music made me feel like I was in the Caribbean. I highly recommend the "Kokonut" cocktail if you like pina coladas! It was so delicious, and came with a mini umbrella which made me smile. Nice touch!

6. Montreal Plaza

Everything at this restaurant was such a delight. The chef and the staff were so friendly, and the food was very fresh and beautifully presented--like art meets food. This desert was outstanding.

7. Cirque du Soleil

The show was exectued under the Big Top in Montreal's Old Port, and I felt like I was visiting a carnival when I walked in. Luzia was truly incredible show that was full of surprises. I've never seen a use of water/rain in such a different and beautiful way, and all the performances were just stunning. You don't want to miss this!
