It's no secret that women had to fight hard for the right to vote, but sometimes history doesn't tell us just how hard they had it. After her BAFTA-nominated Brick Lane, director Sarah Gavron is back with Suffragette to tell the story of several women in early 20th century Britain, from working wife to outlaw fugitive, and how they impacted the growing suffrage movement. Starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Ben Whishaw, and Meryl Streep, the drama is inspired by true events, as women risked their jobs, homes, children, and even their lives for the right to vote. We smell Oscars!
