Meet Naked and Afraid's First Gay Survivalist

Andrea Lopez Naked and Afraid Discovery Channel

Andrea Lopez is the first lesbian to be featured on the hit series.

Discovery Channel's Emmy-nominated survival series Naked and Afraid is always mind-boggling. What sort of hell people will put themselves through with no clear reward (there are no prizes or anything to compensate beyond knowing you could survive naked and, yes, afraid) makes for fascinating television. It returned last week with brand new episodes this fall. But in all those years of seeing men and women rought it in the buff, we've never had an openly gay person featured on the show. Until now.

In this season, lesbian Andrea Lopez is Naked and Afraid's first openly gay survivalist. The 29-year-old personal trailer is from Moab, UT, and she honed her survival skills while being surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the area. She ended up graduating from the police academy (as president of her class) and serving for two years as a patrol officer for the Moab City Police Department and later in Layton City, where she was promoted to detective. After training to be a hostage negotiator, she left the force and returned to Moab, where she's currently working as a personal trainer.

We're excited to see how Lopez handles the challenges. But one thing's for sure: She doesn't like being naked!

Andrea Lopez's episode airs on Sunday, October 18, at 10 p.m.. Watch an exclusive clip below:
