"My first novel, Jack, about a kid whose dad is gay, is one of the 100 most banned books in this country," says Homes, whose took this year's Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction. "It's also on the Library Association's list of, like, 'best books for teenagers.' " This duality of loathed and lauded characterizes Homes's literary career. Though she provokes, Homes isn't a provocateur; rather, she sings in a Greek chorus, commenting on American life as it plays out before her -- and us.
