Young Trans Girl Explains Coming Out to Her Mom in HBO's VICE

VICE

"My mom thought I was a boy and dressed me like a boy; I did not like it."

In the latest episode of HBO's Emmy-winning news show VICE, correspondent Gianna Toboni explores one of today's most divisive and important issues: the medical and social rights of trans youth in America. In an exclusive clip, Toboni interviews a young trans girl, Kai, about her process of explaining to her mother that she's a girl.

"My mom thought I was a boy and dressed me like a boy; I did not like it," she says after showing Tobini some of her favorite toys, from a light-up pony to a picture book about a boy who likes to be a princess. "I already thought she knew I was a girl, but she didn't know, so I had to tell her when I was old enough to say it."

The clip comes from season 5, episode 2 of VICE, titled "Trans Youth," which comes out this Friday, March 3. VICE's fifth season is driven primarily by Toboni and her fellow correspondent Isobel Yeung, a shift from the former, more male-driven casting of the show.
