Airbnb Removes Host for Refusing to Lodge Transgender Woman

A viral tweet prompted the room-sharing website to take action.

An Airbnb "super host" refused to lodge a woman because she came out as transgender before booking.

Shadi Petosky tweeted the response where the host refused to accommodate her, who said she has a "13-year-old boy going through puberty" and how she doesn't want him to feel "any discomforts in his own home."

The Guardian reported that after Petosky's tweet, the host was removed from the room-sharing site.

Petosky has worked as an animator for the children's show Yo Gabba Gabba and produces Danger & Eggs on Amazon.

The sharing economy has come under recent scrutiny for racial and sexual discrimination among participants. Applying civil rights law among business such as Uber and Airbnb is often murky and left to the companies' individual anti-discrimination policies.

Airbnb has sponsored the San Francisco Pride in the past and is currently celebrating Pride month with a rainbow logo and pro-LGBT marketing campaign, encouraging members to #HostwithPride.
