A transgender woman was pushed onto subway tracks in Downtown New York City's SoHo on Monday morning.

The 28-year-old, a woman from Harlem, was waiting for the downtown 6 train at the Bleecker Street and Lafayette Street stop when the assailant asked her, "What are you looking at?" He then ran to a garbage can where he pulled out a plastic bottle, which he threw at her before pushing her onto the tracks.

Witnesses helped the victim back onto the platform as the assailant got away. The woman was treated for lacerations and bruises on her chin and arm following the attack.

New York City police have deployed a hate-crime task force to investigate the crime as a possible "anti-sexual orientation assault." The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP), a group that advocates for transgender people, plans to hold a community outreach project on public safety Friday.

The suspect, seen here on security camera footage, is still at large.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS, submit tips on the Crime Stoppers website, or text 274637 (Crimes) and enter TIP577.
