Because of the controversy over his donations to California's Prop 8, Mozilla co-founder Brendon Eich has resigned as CEO. The Mozilla co-founder and Java Script inventor has faced mounting criticism ever since his appointment was announced last month and today Mozilla's Executive Chairwoman, Mitchell Baker, published a post Mozilla's blog announcing Eich's resignation.
"Brendan Eich has chosen to step down from his role as CEO," writes Baker. "He's made this decision for Mozilla and our community."
Though news of Eich's $1,000 donation made to support Prop 8 has been around since 2012, it was the announcement of his appointment to CEO that kicked up the firestorm. A petition calling for his removal garnered over 70,000 signatures and online dating site OKCupid posted a message asking users not to use Mozilla's Firefox browser. There is no word yet on Eich's replacement.
