According to The Advocate, though Pope Francis reaffirmed the Catholic Church's stance on same-sex marriage, he suggested that the Chruch might explore the possibility of civil unions.
Speaking to Corriere della Sera, the Pope said that with governments legalizing civil unions to better economic conditions for same-sex couples, "We have to look at the different cases and evaluate them in their variety."
The pope had been in support of civil unions when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2010. Named the "Person of the Year" by The Advocate, the 77-year-old pontiff has a history of being supportive of LGBT rights, as compared to his predecessors. Last July, Pope Francis remarked "Who am I to judge?" when asked about gay members of the priesthood.
