Hawaii Governor Pushes for Marriage Equality

The Aloha State will vote on same-sex marriage legislation at the end of October.

Hawaii is jumping on the marriage equality bandwagon. On Monday, Governor Neil Abercrombie called for a special legislative session to pass a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. If successful, Hawaii will join 13 states and Washington, D.C., in allowing gay and lesbian couples to tie the knot. The meeting will be held on October 28.

Though Hawaii allows civil unions, marriage would allow for full couple benefits advocates demand. If the bill is passed, ceremonies could begin in November. House Speaker Joseph Souki said last week, "I believe the governor does want to get this over with. Like most people he's getting tired of the pressure that he's getting on both sides."

Good, Hawaii for the win!
