The New Zealander played the exclusive clip for Tavi Gevinson on Rookie's MTV podcast.

Rookie's Tavi Gevinson interviews Lorde on the first episode of her mag's MTV podcast, and gifts us with one of the earliest "Green Light" demos on record, in which collaborator Jack Antonoff and Lorde begin developing the piano chords that make up the song's triumphant pre-chorus.

Interestingly enough, Lorde and Antonoff got the idea for the heartbreak anthem's piano component after seeing the pianist of Florence + the Machine dramatically hammering keys at a concert.

Gevinson and Lorde also chat about getting personal in their writing, navigating authentic self-deprication, separating a famous persona from a true sense of self and being honest with emotion.

The Rookie podcast episode is titled "The Year of Emotion," after Lorde declares 2017 to have that label toward the beginning of the recording. Author and theater critic Hilton Als also makes an appearance to answer some fan questions at the end of the episode.

Take a listen exclusively on MTV (skip to about 26:00 for the demo).
