A new doc puts a nonagenarian style icon in focus.

Whether rocking enough plastic necklaces to suggest a noose, or appearing on Martha Stewart's talk show in a leather Versace shirt she'd bought for her husband, New York interior designer Iris Apfel is the 93-year-old embodiment of more is more. In the late Albert Maysles's new doc, Iris, the woman whose thick-rimmed glasses may trump Anna Wintour's as the fashion world's most iconic eyewear is captured in all her excessive glory, be it within the garment-packed rooms of her Park Avenue apartment or amid a traveling exhibit that shared her ensembles with the world.

Fans of Maysles's Grey Gardens will note echoes of the 1975 classic, including a scene in which Apfel meticulously chooses her look for the day. But most intriguing is Apfel's unpretentious wisdom: "It's better to be happy than well-dressed," she declares. Iris's great irony is that it depicts a woman defined by material things but incapable of immaterial thinking.
