Dolores O'Riordan and her former band, the Cranberries, achieved huge mainstream success in the '90s with the singles 'Linger,' 'Dreams,' and 'Zombie,' but then the band virtually disappeared. The new and improved Irish rocker discusses her first solo record, being a lesbian icon, and being voted the fourth worst singer in the world. The obvious question: Why did you decide to release a solo album?

  • Entertainment Diary of a Fashion Muse: Notes from a Diva

December 7, 2004 After a swim in my glass bath with underwater lights, I start the day trying to find something to wear. I change three times, deciding on a McQueen dress that zips up either side, quite erotic. Adding beautiful black Manolo satin sandals, my signature Philip Treacy hat to sculpt the face, and a Fendi Fur. Black cab to the Tatler office. (Taxis: great for a snog in the back!) En route happen to drop by Make Up For Ever on South Molton Street, where a wonderful Floriane transforms my face.

A cancer diagnosis can do the strangest things. When he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2004, Brian Malloy had finished a first draft of his latest novel, Brendan Wolf. The darkly funny story of a shapeshifting daydreamer caught up in a doomed crime plot, Wolf received an infusion of compassion in the aftermath of Malloy's diagnosis. "I've become much more passionate about things that bother me'rudeness, hypocrisy, the state of the environment, and the need for human connection,' he says. 'During revisions, I added elements of these things.

  • Truman Says Holy Socks

When he handed in his "When in Rome" feature late last year, Out contributor Michael Joseph Gross also brought these into the office as a gift (we won't say who's wearing them).

They are bright red. They pull all the way up to the knees. They are a part of every new priest's uniform, says Michael. And you too can own a pair if you make a pilgrimage to the Vatican gift shop!

  • Truman Says If We Were Anywhere Near L.A. Right Now...

We'd head straight for Birdwell Britches and get our own custom-made board shorts.

    Board shorts?

Yes, board shorts. Not the cargo pants-spin offs you see at Old Navy, but genuine Angeleno surfer gear.   Generally much more flattering than a Speedo, or its spandex cousin, boxer-brief-style trunks.

  • Truman Says We've Been Infected

By viral marketing, that is. Matt writes in to say that that silly sticker we showed you a week or so ago ("soft talk" and "pegleg") which looked like a phone sex line was actually a bit of super-subliminal advertising for the ugly-is-beautiful fashion label Pegleg.

Readers, feast your eyes and, if you like what you see, spend your copious pink dollars on these duds!

  • Truman Says Pink Was For Boys, Blue For Girls

Just shows it's all in how you see things...

“There has been a great diversity of opinion on the subject, but the generally accepted rule is pink for the boy and blue for the girl. The reason is that pink being a more decided and stronger color is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.”
