Fashion

We all know one: the fashion monster. All they talk about is how Phoebe Philo saved Céline or how s/he's still devestated over Olivier Theyskens being fired from Nina Ricci. They're totally on top of all the hot trends and name drop obscure designer names as if they're A-list celebrities. Well, it's now come to our attention that there is another type of fashion monster on the scene -- the unknowledgable fashionista.

Seriously, how does he do it all? In addition to starring in, producing, writing, directing a bajillion movies, going to school AND teaching, he finds time to host the Oscars and do photo shoots? We have a feeling that if you took that shirt off (yum), and turned him around (yum!) you'd see a little panel where you can access his robotic insides like Vicki from Small Wonder.

While fashion may be our first love, art comes in a close second. And art that benefits a charity, especially one like AIDS Community Research Initiative of America -- a group thoroughly dedicated to the advancement of medical treatments to those suffering with AIDS. The charity has partnered with graffiti artist John "Crash" Matos -- a supporter of ACRIA for some time -- to create an exclusive work to be auctioned (left).

We know we give a lot of love to our fashionistos out here in New York, but this one is for your kiddies out in San Francisco. This Sunday the brotherly duo behind the world travel-approved clothing label Burkman Brothers are making a stop in SF and hosting a trunk show at Welcome Stranger. Get to know the guys behind clothes -- which can best be described as an amazing mix of classic American sportswear with a worldly twist from 2pm to 5pm.

During the Barneys Sample Sale we were thrilled to find a rack with a few pieces of Patrik Ervell's superbly minimalist clothing. Unfortunately, they were all sized extra large. While we left that sale feeling disheartened, it looks like we've been given a reprieve -- and same to anyone in New York. Today, starting at 12pm, you'll get a chance to take on Ervell's simple but elegant menswear (which was nominated for Best New Menswear Designer this year by GQ). Shirts will be $95 from $220 and knits will start at $120 (usually $330).

The french knitwear master Azzedine Alaïa thinks that the pressure to create too many collections is "inhumane" and is probable cause for John Galliano's breakdown.

So, the other day we showed you all the fierceness that is Rihanna in the April issue of Vogue. But of course, people always have to be hatin'. Now the blogosphere is all up in arms and saying that Rihanna swiped Ariel's (she of Disney's The Little Mermaid) trademark look -- specifically that red mane (read: weave for RiRi). While we do admit that there are some similarities, people need to simmer down now!

Looks like the media men and women over at the New York Times are no longer in the business of giving you the goods for free. Internet proliferation has fostered a whole new group of readers who don't need little Jimmy to toss your paper on the yard and get it all wet when the sprinklers kick in. And anyways, why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free, right? Well, that milk ain't free no more, kiddies.

It's no secret that many mega-retailers take high-end fashion designs and water them down for the masses. H&M, Zara and Steve Madden have reputations for recreating designer goods for a fraction of the cost, with barely any shame.

Well, it's that time of year again. The CFDA has chosen their honorees and nominees for what is ostensibly the Oscars of fashion. Let's take a look at who's in the running to be honored this year, shall we? A list of all nominees are below, with our predictions.
