Why you should be wearing denim jeans today

Did you know today is Denim Day? Every year on April 24, the organization Peace Over Violence encourages everyone to wear denim jeans in an effort to raise awareness on the misconceptions that still exist on sexual assault.

Denim Day started in 1999 after the high-profile case of an Italian woman who was raped by her driving instructor. The trial was taken to the Italian Supreme Court, but was eventually dismissed because the judge argued that "because the victim wore very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex."

The case generated widespread uproar, and Denim Day was launched as a global rape prevention campaign. People are asked to make a social (and fashion) statement, wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against sexual violence.
